Question 1

What is a pension bridging strategy?

Accepted Answer

A pension bridging strategy involves using your private pension pot to provide income from the point you retire early until your state pension begins. For example, if you retire at 60 but your state pension starts at 67, you need to 'bridge' 7 years of income from your own savings. Once the state pension kicks in, the amount you need to draw from your pot reduces.

Question 2

How much do I need in my pension to retire at 60?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the income you need and your state pension age. If you need £15,000 per year and your state pension starts at 67, you need to bridge 7 years. At 3% growth (with withdrawals taken at the start of each year), you would need approximately £96,000 in your pot just for the bridge period. After that, the state pension (£12,548/year for 2026/27) reduces what you need to draw, but you will still need ongoing savings if your income target exceeds the state pension amount.

Question 3

Can I access my pension before state pension age?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can access most private and workplace pensions from age 55 (rising to 57 from 6 April 2028). This is separate from the state pension, which you cannot claim until you reach your state pension age — currently rising from 66 to 67 between April 2026 and March 2028. A further rise to 68 is legislated for those born after 5 April 1977 (timetable 2044-2046, currently under government review). Accessing your pension early means your pot has to last longer, so planning the bridge period carefully is essential.

Question 4

Do I get the full state pension automatically?

Accepted Answer

No. To receive the full new state pension (currently £12,548/year in 2026/27), you need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions. If you have fewer qualifying years, you will receive a proportionally smaller amount. You can check your NI record and state pension forecast at gov.uk. If you plan to retire early, consider whether the gap in contributions affects your entitlement.
