Band 8a is the entry point to NHS senior management and consultant-level allied health professional roles. Pay runs from £57,528 to £64,750 in 2026/27, with this calculator pre-filled at the £61,139 midpoint. At this salary, pay sits well above the higher-rate tax threshold, which makes the pension scheme even more valuable — contributions attract 40% tax relief, yet the pension itself is likely to be taxed mostly at 20% in retirement, creating a significant tax arbitrage. Annual CARE accrual at this salary is about £1,132 per year. A Band 8a with 25 years of total NHS service — say five years at Bands 5–7 and twenty at 8a — could project a total pension of £27,000–£32,000 per year from the 2015 scheme alone. However, this is also the first band where annual allowance tax charges can become relevant if pay rises are large or if the member has significant legacy benefits growing in value. Staff promoted from Band 7 to 8a should check their pension growth does not trigger an unexpected tax bill, particularly if they also have additional pension purchases in payment.
